Practical, half-day Online training with Krystal Hawkins
Police and other first responders experience the same fundamental trauma responses as anyone else, but the context in which they work is distinctive. Repeated exposure to trauma can occur alongside ongoing operational demands, responsibility for others, shift work, organisational and legal scrutiny, and limited recovery time. Trauma treatment often occurs while the person continues to face these demands.
Krystal will explore how this context informs EMDR therapy, maintaining the established eight-phase framework while responding to the individual’s circumstances, relationships and treatment needs.
This training will help EMDR therapists advance their clinical practice with police and other first responders, with a focus on case conceptualisation, treatment planning, and practical clinical decision-making. It is suitable for therapists already working in this area and those wanting to develop the confidence and understanding to do so.
What the training will cover
- Formulation and treatment planning: Understanding occupational and cumulative trauma, the memory networks being activated, and how to plan treatment alongside ongoing exposure
- Adaptive occupational survival strategies: Making sense of vigilance, emotional restraint, compartmentalisation and self-reliance, and their implications for therapeutic engagement and processing
- Relational engagement and readiness: Working collaboratively to assess readiness for processing and make decisions about the pace and focus of treatment
- EMDR approaches and interventions: Considering early and recent-event intervention, comprehensive EMDR, and working-memory and sensory approaches
- Recovery in context: Recognising when treatment may need to narrow, broaden, or change focus, and supporting longer-term recovery and resilience
Throughout, the emphasis is on practical application and collaborative clinical reasoning: understanding the person and their occupational environment, rather than approaching treatment through symptoms alone.
