In this training, Ana explores the titration continuum, as she guides us to understand when and how to adjust intensity and proximity of traumatic material, based on the client’s moment-to-moment capacity.

EMDR clinicians draw on a wide range of tools to support co-regulation, modulate arousal, restore presence and facilitate the integration of traumatic memories. However, in developmental and complex trauma, healing requires more than following protocol. It requires a therapist who is deeply attuned to the client’s nervous system, the inter-subjective field, and the layers of meaning beneath the words.

Across development, trauma is often stored in implicit systems – as non-verbal, sensory, emotional and somatic layers of experience that cannot be reached through insight or language alone. Many clients also carry trauma-related phobias, making even brief contact with traumatic memory feel overwhelming or unsafe.  In these situations titration is not just helpful – it is essential.

Participants will learn when explicit processing is possible – working directly with memory, cognition and narrative – and when implicit pathways are needed – including image, metaphor, body, sensation, symbolic expression or play.

The central focus will be micro-dosing EMDR: offering brief, carefully calibrated doses of traumatic material while maintaining dual awareness and nervous system regulation. This honours the limits of tolerance, particularly for clients who have experienced early overwhelm or carry fragmented memory systems. Ana will explore the many access routes on the titration continuum, including standard reprocessing, pendulation, oscillation, symbolic processing and micro-dosing – while guiding the therapist to remain flexible, present and developmentally attuned.
